FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions
What is an automatic watch winder?
An automatic watch winder is a motorised device that keeps your automatic (self-winding) watch running when you are not wearing it. It mimics the natural motion of a wrist by rotating the watch at precise intervals, keeping the mainspring wound and the movement lubricated — so your watch is always set, always ready, and mechanically healthy.
Do I really need a watch winder?
If you own more than one automatic watch and rotate between them, a winder eliminates the daily friction of manual winding and resetting the time, date, and complications every morning. It also keeps the lubricating oils circulating inside the movement, which can extend the interval between costly service appointments. For watches with complex complications — moon phase, annual calendar, perpetual calendar — a winder is essentially mandatory.
Can a watch winder damage my watch?
A quality winder set to the correct TPD (Turns Per Day) for your specific watch is safe in normal use. The risk comes from low-quality winders with unknown or unconfigurable TPD, excessive rotation speeds, or strong electromagnetic fields. Brummell Winders products display their TPD settings clearly and are designed within safe operational ranges for all major brands. Please review our TPD Guide tab to set the correct parameters for your watch — operating a winder outside the published TPD range is excluded from our 2-Year Limited Motor Warranty.
Is there a danger of over-winding with a watch winder?
No. All modern automatic watches include a slipping clutch mechanism that prevents over-winding — once the mainspring is fully wound, it simply slips. However, running a winder at excessive TPD puts unnecessary stress on the clutch and rotor over time. Setting your winder to the correct TPD for your watch (see our TPD Guide) eliminates this concern entirely.
Which rotation direction should I use?
It depends on your movement. Most modern automatic movements wind in both directions (bi-directional). Some older movements wind clockwise only (notably Panerai). Brummell Winders products are programmable with CW, CCW, and bi-directional modes. Refer to our TPD Guide for direction recommendations by brand.
Is my Rolex / Omega / Breitling compatible?
Yes. Brummell Winders watch winders are compatible with automatic watches from all major brands including Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Tudor, IWC, Tag Heuer, Tissot, Seiko, Longines, Hamilton, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Panerai, and more. See the TPD Guide tab for brand-specific settings. It remains your responsibility to satisfy yourself that a winder is suitable for your particular timepiece.
Will my winder look exactly like the photographs?
Product photography is representative rather than exact. Because our winders and cases are finished in natural materials such as wood, leather, and marble, minor variations in grain, colour, and finish between individual units are inherent to the material and are not defects. We may also introduce small design refinements between production batches. If a product differs materially from its description on our website, that is treated as a fault and your rights under our Return & Refund Policy and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply in full.
Does the watch winder include a watch?
No. Brummell Winders watch winders are sold as standalone units only. No watch is included.
What is TPD (Turns Per Day)?
TPD stands for Turns Per Day — the number of complete rotations your watch winder performs in 24 hours. Each automatic watch movement requires a specific number of daily rotations to remain fully wound. Setting the correct TPD is essential: too low and your watch may stop; too high puts unnecessary stress on the rotor. Most automatic watches require between 500 and 900 TPD.

My authorised dealer told me not to use a winder. Is that correct?
This is a widely debated topic. The concern raised by some ADs almost always relates to low-quality winders with uncontrolled or incorrectly set TPD — not to quality winders properly configured for your movement. A correctly programmed winder replicates natural wrist motion and is accepted as safe by independent watchmakers and the serious collector community. The critical variable is using a winder with a transparent, configurable TPD — which is precisely the standard Brummell Winders is built to.
How do I program the TPD on my Brummell Winders winder?
Each Brummell Winders unit includes a user manual with step-by-step programming instructions. Generally: press and hold the settings button to enter programming mode, use +/- to select TPD, then select rotation direction (CW / CCW / Bi-directional). Confirm and exit. Your settings are saved even after unplugging. For assistance, contact support@brummellwinders.com — we reply within two business days.
Do I have to use the power adapter supplied?
Yes. Your winder must be used with the power adapter and accessories included in the original packaging, or with accessories we have approved in writing. Using third-party adapters or voltage converters voids the 2-Year Limited Motor Warranty, and damage caused by power surges or electrical incompatibility is excluded from it.
What is your return policy?
You have a legal right to cancel your order within 14 days of receiving it, without giving any reason, and to receive a full refund of the price you paid together with the standard delivery cost. On top of that, our 30-Day Peace of Mind Guarantee voluntarily extends the window to 30 days from delivery.
For change-of-mind returns you arrange and pay for return shipping. To start, email support@brummellwinders.com with your order number — our return address is issued per order, so please wait for it before sending anything back. Full details are on our Return & Refund Policy page.
Can I return a winder I have already switched on?
Yes. You are entitled to examine and handle the goods as you reasonably would in a shop in order to establish their nature, characteristics and functioning — that includes unpacking the product, inspecting it, and switching it on to check that it works. Doing so does not affect your right to cancel or to a refund.
If the goods are handled beyond what is necessary for that purpose and their value is reduced as a result — visible wear, missing components, damage caused after delivery, or a product returned without its packaging — we may deduct an amount reflecting that reduction from your refund. We will always tell you the amount and the reason before processing.
What happens if I return after day 14 but within 30 days?
Our voluntary 30-Day Peace of Mind Guarantee applies, and you choose one of three resolutions: an exchange for the same or an equivalent model (no fee), a store credit equal to 100% of your purchase price, valid 12 months (no fee), or a refund to your original payment method, subject to a 15% restocking fee. That fee applies only to requests made after day 14 under this voluntary guarantee — never to a cancellation within the first 14 days, and never to a faulty item.
My item is faulty. What are my rights?
Within 30 days of delivery, if the goods are faulty you have the short-term right to reject them and receive a full refund, with no restocking fee. Between 30 days and 6 months, you are entitled to a repair or replacement; if that is unsuccessful you are entitled to a refund, which may be reduced to reflect the use you have had. In all of these cases we cover the full cost of return — contact us before shipping and we will provide a prepaid return label.
I received the wrong item. What do I do?
We sincerely apologise. Contact support@brummellwinders.com with your order number and a photograph of the item received. We will send the correct product and collect the incorrect one at no cost to you.
Who pays for return shipping?
For change-of-mind returns and cancellations, you arrange and pay for return shipping. You may choose any carrier; we recommend a tracked and insured service, as the goods remain your responsibility until they reach us. We cover the full cost of return where the item is faulty, damaged on arrival, not as described, or where we sent you the wrong item.
How long before I receive my refund?
Once we have received the goods back — or you have provided proof that you have sent them — we issue your refund within 14 days, and in most cases within 5–7 business days of the goods arriving. Refunds are always made to your original payment method. Your bank or card issuer may take additional time to show the funds.
Is my product covered by the 2-Year Motor Warranty?
All motorised watch winders purchased directly from brummellwinders.com include a 2-Year Limited Motor Warranty covering defects in the motor and winding mechanism for 24 months from delivery. Non-motorised items — watch boxes, rolls, trays, and stands — are not covered by it, but remain protected by your statutory rights. The warranty is separate from the return policy and is offered in addition to your legal rights. Full terms, eligibility criteria, and the claim process are on our Warranty page.
Where do you deliver?
We deliver to addresses in the United Kingdom. If you are unsure whether we can reach your location, contact us at support@brummellwinders.com before ordering.
How much does delivery cost?
Delivery is free on all orders, with no minimum spend, and every parcel is dispatched with tracking.
How long will my delivery take?
Orders are processed within 1–2 business days of payment confirmation. We operate a fulfilment network across the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, and Asia, and the warehouse used for your order depends on the model ordered and current stock, so estimated times vary by product:
Dispatched from the United Kingdom: 4–10 business days
Dispatched from Europe: 6–10 business days
Dispatched from the United States: 7–12 business days
Dispatched from Asia: 12–20 business days
These are estimates after dispatch, not guarantees, and may vary with carrier workload and customs clearance. A tracking number is emailed once your order ships. Full terms are on our Shipping Policy page.
Why has my order arrived in several parcels?
If you order multiple items they may be dispatched separately from different fulfilment centres and arrive at different times, each with its own tracking number. This is not an error. Please check all your tracking numbers before contacting us — and if anything looks wrong, get in touch and we will investigate.
Will I be charged customs duties or import taxes?
Orders dispatched from outside the United Kingdom may be subject to import VAT, customs duty, and handling fees charged on delivery. These charges are set by HMRC and the carrier, are not included in the price you pay us, and are the responsibility of the recipient. We have no control over them and cannot predict them in advance. If you would like an estimate before ordering, we recommend contacting HMRC or your carrier.
My tracking has not updated. What should I do?
Please allow up to 72 hours from your dispatch email for tracking to become active on the carrier's system. If there is still no movement after that, contact support@brummellwinders.com. If your tracking shows no movement for more than 10 consecutive business days and the parcel has not been marked as delivered, we will open an investigation with the carrier on your behalf — these typically take 7–21 business days. If the parcel cannot be located, we will send a replacement or issue a full refund.
My tracking says delivered but I have not received it.
Your goods remain at our risk until they are delivered into your physical possession, or into the possession of a person you have identified to take delivery. Contact support@brummellwinders.com and we will take it from there. Before you do, it usually speeds things up to check with anyone else at the address, look for a safe-place or neighbour delivery note, and check with your local delivery office — carriers frequently mark a parcel delivered a short time before it physically arrives.
My parcel arrived damaged. What do I do?
Photograph the outer packaging and the damaged product before unpacking further, and keep all packaging materials. Then open a damage claim directly with the carrier within 48 hours — carriers bear primary liability for transit damage and impose short deadlines. Email us at the same time at support@brummellwinders.com with your order number, photographs, and carrier claim reference, and we will supply whatever dispatch documentation the carrier requires. If your claim is not resolved within 14 days, or is rejected without proper justification, come back to us and we will escalate it directly with the carrier as the account holder.
Can I change my delivery address after ordering?
Address changes are only possible before dispatch. Contact us immediately at support@brummellwinders.com if you need to update your address. We will try to intercept the shipment if it has not yet been dispatched, but we cannot guarantee changes once an order is in transit, and additional shipping costs arising from an address correction will be charged to the customer.
Can I change or cancel my order?
If your order has not yet been dispatched, contact support@brummellwinders.com with your order number and we will cancel it and refund you in full, with no fee and nothing to return. If it has already been dispatched, your 14-day right to cancel still applies from the day you receive the goods — see our Return & Refund Policy.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Klarna. All transactions are processed through Shopify's PCI DSS Level 1 certified payment infrastructure. Brummell Winders does not store your payment card details at any point.
What currency are your prices in?
All prices are displayed in Pounds Sterling (GBP £). The price shown is the total price payable to us for the product. Import VAT or customs duty may apply separately on delivery for orders dispatched from outside the UK — see the Shipping tab.
How do I track my order?
A shipping confirmation email with your tracking number and link is sent once your order ships. If you have not received it within 5 business days, check your spam folder or contact support@brummellwinders.com.
Is it safe to shop on brummellwinders.com?
Yes. brummellwinders.com is secured with SSL/TLS encryption (HTTPS). All payments are processed through Shopify's PCI DSS Level 1 certified payment infrastructure — the highest standard for payment security. Your financial data is never stored on our servers. See our Privacy Policy for how we handle your personal data.
